Powell Elementary Students Earn Technicians License

Three more students from Powell have passed the exam and become licensed operators in the Amateur Radio Service. The entry level license is the Technician license. The Technician license exam includes FCC rules and operating procedures, and a basic understanding of radio and electronics. Volunteer Examiners (VEs) from the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society came to Powell School on March 25th and administered the exam to 3-5 grade students in the "Now Your Talking Amateur Radio" Elective.

Our new operators are:

Ben - KJ4KWH, Grace - KJ4KWG, and Neel -KJ4KWF

Operators from previous years are: Sam - KI4TRG and Brian - KI4VVD

The license exams must be administered by a team of at least three Volunteer Examiners who are certified by the FCC. The exam procedures are strictly regulated. This is the third year Powell Students have participated. Powell Elementary staff value and appreciate the time and effort of the Volunteer Examiners (VEs) from the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society.

The Amateur Radio Elective is taught by Ms. Bray - KI4VVE with the support and assistance of Parent Volunteer Steve Jenkins - KA8HXX

The Elective is taught over two quarters and includes instruction and experiments in: Morse Code, Electricity, Propogation, Ohm's Law, Sound Waves and Atmosphere.
