Elective Registration
Dear Parents,
The elective curriculum offered at Powell is the cornerstone of the Gifted and Talented Magnet Program. We offer our students a variety of electives that will meet both their individual interests and needs. Our first semester elective program will begin on September 8 th . The information you will help you understand and select courses for your child:
A Parent/ Student Elective Choice Form - You should have received your child's elective choice form on Friday. This document lists the elective courses available to your child this fall. Be sure to Indicate your child's first, second, third, and fourth choices for each class period . Be sure to sign the bottom of this form before you return it to your child's homeroom teacher.

Elective Highlights
Our hope is that all students will have a balance of academic and non-academic electives in their schedule. We will, however, also allow students who display an interest in a specific art form to focus their efforts there. (For example, a student with a strong interest in dancing can take two dance electives during the same quarter) This option is reserved for those students who demonstrate strong academic performance in the classroom.
Daily physical activity is essential to your child's health and well-being. Selecting a physical education elective ensures that your child will receive regular exercise which research shows contributes to students' academic success. If your child is not involved in an after school sport or does not engage in regular exercise, we strongly recommend that you select a physical education /dance/ movement elective.
Band and Strings are yearlong elective classes. We must limit band and strings electives due to space and instrument availability. A few instruments are available at the school for families with severe financial difficulty.
A teacher's initials beside a course offering on the Parent Choice Form indicates that your child's teacher believes it is an appropriate selection and recommends it for your child. However, a teacher's initial does not guarantee placement in an elective course.
Elective Scheduling Dates :
September 1st -- K-2 Packets sent home
September 4th -- K-2 Arena Scheduling , 3-5 Elective Packets sent home
September 9th /10th -- 3-5 Arena Scheduling - Elective Choice Forms due to teachers
September 14th -- Elective Program begins
We will use our web-based “Arena Scheduling” system again this semester. The students (1 st - 5 th graders) guided by the Elective Choice Form and under the supervision of administrators, and teachers will choose his/her electives on-line in the Computer Lab. Many of the elective classes fill quickly. We may not be able to place students in their highest course preferences. This is why you must select and rank four elective courses for each period block . We do not change student schedules because he/she did not get their first choice. We will change electives if a student registers for a previously taken course, or for an inappropriate elective.
Your child's teacher may recommend an elective for your child and will indicate so by initialing beside the suggested course on the Parent Choice Form. A teacher recommendation, however, does not guarantee placement in that elective.
This can be a confusing process, so please do not hesitate to call if you have questions. Call and leave a message for your child's homeroom teacher, or an administrator.
