The fundamental purpose of our school is student learning but our elective program is what makes us such a unique school. We are a gifted and talented magnet school, which means we believe that every child has gifts and talents. Our particular focus is in the areas of visual and performing arts but our media/technology program is a strength as well.
Please come visit us here at Powell Elementary to get a feel for the warm and enthusiastic environment. We would love to give you a tour. If you have any questions please contact us at the school at 856-7737

Our Mission, Vision Statements and Collective Commitments
The Mission of Powell GT Magnet Elementary is for all students to achieve academic excellence.
Powell Vision Statements:
The staff will work in a collaborative environment where they support one another in an honest and open manner, and share knowledge and resources within and across grade-levels and content areas.
Powell will have a high teacher retention rate because a sense of community exists, both personally and professionally, among the staff, because we take responsibility for one another and all the students and the administration is both accessible and supportive.
The Powell staff is results oriented and works to focus effort and resources on learning and are accountable to their teams and students.
Staff engages students in differentiated instruction that addresses multiple intelligences and authentically integrates the arts.
Staff utilizes data to inform instruction and actively seeks out and tries new strategies to improve student learning.
Powell has a systematic intervention plan in place to respond to the needs of all students in a timely manner
Powell is a safe environment where the children are invested in their own learning, are respectful to staff and one another and are prepared for their future.
The school climate is inviting to staff, students and parents and a place where learning takes precedent over everything else.
Collective Commitments
In order to achieve the vision of Powell as a Professional Learning Community, Powell staff make the following collective commitments:
Through our actions and words we will communicate to students and parents the urgency and importance of their learning and the impact their behavior has on their success
We will communicate in a professional manner with our colleagues
We will initiate and work to maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders (students, parents, colleagues & community)
We will seek out and share new ideas and learning to best meet the needs our students
We will fully utilize instructional time, be respectful of our colleagues time and space and will begin instruction at 9:15am
We will sincerely implement the Four Essential Questions of a Professional Learning Community:
What is it we expect students to learn? (Curriculum focus)
How will we know when they've learned it? (Common assessments)
How will we respond when they don't know it? (Systematic intervention)
How will we respond when they already know it? (Meaningful enrichment)
We will celebrate successes, both big and small
We will engage students in moderate physical activity daily, as the schedule permits, with a goal of 30 minutes
